9 OF WATER

Decan Title: Happiness

RWS Description: A plump figure sits with his knees spread apart and his arms crossed over his belly. His expression is one of contentment. There are nine cups on the draped, curved counter behind him.

RWS Symbols:

The figure: Pamela has taken inspiration from Shakespeare’s Sir John Falstaff from Henry IV parts I and II. This comical character is very pleased with himself, indeed. The character in the play had once been a page to the Duke of Norfolk, so it is interesting to see his development from a page who holds just one cup to the man of nine Cups.

Red bonnet: Satisfaction, wish fulfillment, and life’s pleasures.

Keywords:

UPRIGHT: Cheerful, Pleasure, Wishes Fulfilled, Satisfaction, Gratitude

REVERSE: Haughty, Smug, Unfulfilled Wishes, Discontent, Greed

Decan Ruler (Jupiter): This decan unmistakably embodies Jupiter’s essence, illustrated by figures who are well-nourished, well-dressed, and content. Its ideal expression begins with satisfying immaterial and spiritual needs, which then leads to true happiness and tangible abundance. When harmony exists between the spiritual and material worlds, a generous and magnanimous spirit arises, reflecting Jupiter’s influence. At its core, this decan poses the question: Is there harmony between what is meaningful and profitable? The significance lies less in the visible outcomes and more in the dynamic process that fosters authentic satisfaction and well-being. This decan highlights the fulfillment that comes from living a meaningful life, where committing to what truly matters brings lasting satisfaction and eventually leads to material rewards. Jupiter rules over this decan with exceptional potency, bestowing a rare and fortunate blend of spiritual insight and material ease. Those born with this placement possess poise and deep insight that allows them to bring harmony to diverse and even challenging situations. This decan symbolizes realizing material rewards due to harmonizing one’s internal world and outer circumstances.

Decan (Pisces): In the second decan of Pisces, the unseen depths of the spiritual takes form, revealing success and fulfillment in the material world. Unlike the first decan—marked by wandering, instability, and the stirrings of an unnamed revelation—in the second decan, the deeper truth now demands integration. The figures that are grounded in the invisible begin to shape the visible world. The primary challenge in this decan involves bridging the gap between one’s insight into the deeper nature of reality and the concrete conditions of everyday life. It is a process of cultivating harmony between inner ideals and outward appearances. While demanding, this stage is more favorable than the first decan, as it is marked by greater clarity and continuity, rather than the disorientation and abrupt upheavals encountered earlier. The second decan of Pisces centers on happiness that arises from the unseen—it fulfills the deep need for meaning and understanding one’s place in the world—and from this subtle yet steady foundation, it offers sustenance to the material. This decan signifies the process of drawing in treasures from the depths of the sea, gathering and reclaiming what is hidden beneath the surface. In the first decan of Pisces, the figures dissolve into the sea’s embrace, while in the second, they reemerge as offspring of the mysterious depths.

9: Nine represent realization in the world of the element.

Sephira (Yesod): All nines deal with the repository of formal images behind conscious experience, and correspond to the nineth sephira, Yesod, which is commonly referred to as “Foundation.” Yesod is associated with the Moon. The Moon receives light from the Sun, and it is through the Sun’s image revealed in the waters of the Moon that one learns about the Light of the Soul. The Moon archetype reflects, inviting us to slow down and attune to the depths of both our inner emotional world and the surrounding environment.

World (Briah): All Cups correspond to the second of four worlds, the World of Briah (“The World of Creation”), which is also called the creative world. The element associated with the World of Briah is water.

The Story of Water: The element of water, traditionally symbolized by the suit of cups in the Tarot system, exhibits an inherent connection with the domains of relationships and desires. The essence of this element is inextricably linked to the exploration and expression of emotions encompassing comfort, safety, danger, desire, delusion, contentment, love, and a myriad of other permutations that constitute the nuanced spectrum of human affective experience.
