Interpretation: As the title “Material Trouble” suggests, this decan is about a worried vision of poverty motivating one to align one’s thoughts with solutions and purposeful action to multiply resources. With Mercury in Taurus, the Manifestor and the Preacher are the majors associated with the 5 of Earth. Mercury anticipates and plans against obstacles, at times resorting to ceremonial magic, ritual, or affirmative prayer to aim the mind. The 5 of Earth, which signifies the challenges with resources, represents how through intention, which directs the will, challenges with material resources can be overcome.

Myths: This decan is associated with myths about agriculture, creation, and the challenges of securing prosperity.

Card Details

Decan Ruler (Mercury): This decan is about understanding one’s resources to multiply their value. Those born with this placement excel at long-term planning and understand how to cultivate their resources. Many of these individuals experience anxiety and are motivated by fear, but the essential task is to overcome fear and strategically plan for the future.

Decan (Taurus): The first decan of Taurus unveils expansive, untamed fields, calling for contemplation on the great task of cultivation. While worry motivates individuals to engage in labor, persistent distractions of temporary pleasures pose a true threat to the soil’s rich potential. For those who do not sow and reap, the nightmare becomes inevitable, and scarcity becomes a recurring experience. Since this decan is associated with the sciences essential for drawing fruit from the land, plans should be made to create a surplus that will provide security during difficult times.

5: Fives represent challenge in the world of the element.

Tree of Life (Geburah in Assiah): The Five of Pentacles is Geburah in Assiah. In the Material World, Geburah is a challenge with resources.

Sephira (Geburah): All fives deal with destruction and clarification through discipline, which corresponds to the fifth sephira, Geburah, which is commonly referred to by Qabalists as “Severity.” Geburah is associated with fierce Mars. Mars represents a strict discipline that offers a necessary corrective by tearing away all that is useless, undesirable, or outdated. The Mars archetype asserts desires, through taking action we reinforce our motivations, pursuing what we want and actively avoid what we don’t want.

World (Assiah): All Pentacles correspond to the last of the four worlds, Assiah (“The World of Action”), which is also called the material world. The element that is associated with the World of Assiah is earth.

The Story of Earth: The element of earth, traditionally symbolized by the suit of pentacles in the Tarot system, exhibits an intrinsic association with the physical resources and the material realm. Earth is the heaviest and most stable of the four classical elements that constitute the foundational components of the manifest world. In stark contrast to fire, earth is the least dynamic element, yet paradoxically, it is also the most enduring and long-lasting in its manifestation within the physical plane. Earth symbolizes stability, grounding, and an inherent sense of solidity and permanence. The narratives and stories aligned with the earth element revolve thematically around the cultivation, acquisition, and harvesting of tangible resources from the physical world.
