4 OF FIRE

Decan Title: Perfected Work

RWS Description: There is a garland suspended over four wands in the foreground. Two females raise bouquets. There is a bridge leading to a castle in the background.

RWS Symbols:

Castles: The castled heights in the background resemble those protected by the Chariot, as well as the little towns depicted throughout the Pentacles suit. It could even be the castle on which the 2 of Wands stands.

Bridge: The rounded bridge half-obscured by foliage may be Maidstone Bridge in Kent, the same bridge pictured in the 5 of Cups. The bridge may signal either welcome or leave-taking.

Garlanded Staves: The garlanded staves strongly recall the huppah, the bridal structure erected over the newlyweds in a traditional Jewish wedding. This temporary construction symbolizes the home; its unification of natural and built elements recalls the Empress as Mother Nature and the Emperor as the great architect.

Interpretation: As the title “Perfected Work” suggests, this decan is about the power to unite through charisma, bringing others together in joyful celebration to honor each milestone as a beacon of progress. With Venus in Aries, The Nurturer and The Leader are the majors associated with the 4 of Fire.  Although Venus is in detriment in Aries, it offers respite during stressful times through celebrations that honor fulfilled accomplishments. The 4 of Fire, which signifies the structure of ambitions, represents observing milestones.

Card Details

Decan Ruler (Venus): Since Venus is in her detriment in Aries, she struggles to express her qualities in this sign. While Venus seeks to enact harmony and grace, Aries is a harsh environment for manifesting these attributes. The challenge of this decan is to recognize when the passion driving a relationship is solely a product of the intensity of the situation. It calls for the realization that while experiences in struggle can spark relations, they don’t guarantee permanence, and yet the fleeting nature adds to the overall significance. Venus brings a natural charisma and seductive energy. In this decan, Venus’ power of beauty and attraction manifests through the martial energy of Aries, creating a fiery, passionate expression of love and desire. This placement favors people who excel in performative roles, those who are either artists or skilled in crafts.

Sign (Aries): The third decan of Aries represents the spirit’s power to attract, inspire, and unite individuals with shared passions. This decan extends outward, infecting people with excitement with regards to whatever is generated by our world. There is a sense of drama and performance. While there is a remarkable power in creating a shared sense of spirit, even in the harshest circumstances, the connections that emerge often do not promise lasting bonds in that they require constant intensity to survive.

4: Fours represent structure in the world of the element.

Tree of Life (Chesed in Atziluth): The Four of Wands corresponds to Chesed in Atziluth. In the WorId of Pure Spirit, Chesed is the structure of ambitions.

Sephira (Chesed): All fours deal with the framework of manifestation, and correspond to the fourth sephira, Chesed, which is commonly referred to by Qabalists as “Mercy.” Chesed is associated with generous, expansive Jupiter. Jupiter represents the renewed manifestation of the four primordial elements of Kether, establishing the archetypal pattern for matter fully realized in the divided elements of Malkuth. The Jupiter archetype expands possibilities, broadening our perspective to embrace new opportunities, and encouraging us to grow by venturing beyond our comfort zones with faith and optimism.

World (Atziluth): All Wands correspond to the first of four worlds, the World of Atziluth (“The World of Emanation”), which is also called the archetypal world. The element associated with the World of Atziluth is Fire.

The Story of Fire: The element of fire, traditionally symbolized by the suit of wands in the Tarot system, epitomizes the least structured and most dynamic state of physical manifestation. An intrinsic characteristic of this element is its propensity to illuminate. Attributes of fire include brightness, impatience, and ambition. Fire is the sole element possessing the capacity to generate light, thereby assertively announcing its presence. Fire exhibits the most aggressive and assertive nature among the four elements, yet paradoxically, it is also the most impermanent. This element catalyzes possibilities and actively instigates transformative change in situations, rather than passively receiving and conforming to existing circumstances. Fire shapes reality according to its indomitable will, refusing to be confined by prevailing conditions. The narratives and stories aligned with the fire element thematically revolve around creation, transmutation, and transformation.
