3 OF AIR

Decan Title: Sorrow

RWS Description: Three swords pierce a heart and there are clouds and rain in the background.

RWS Symbols:

The Pierced Heart: The design seems to be a stylized version of the 3 of Swords from the fifteenth-century Sola Busca Tarot (the first tarot deck to include scenic pips). A 1907 exhibit at the British Museum featured photographs of the Sola Busca deck, and it seems likely that Pamela Colman Smith had the opportunity to view the exhibit before beginning work on her own card images in 1909.

REVERSE: Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Resolution, Acceptance, Renewal

Interpretation: As the title “Sorrow” suggests, this decan is about the pain of betrayal from making unwise commitments, and the wisdom gained from facing difficult truths and releasing what no longer serves oneself. With the Saturn in Libra, the Universe and the Reconciler are the majors associated with the 3 of Air. Exalted in Libra, Saturn necessitates the development of mental clarity to confront and accept difficult truths; in time, this leads to wisdom and resolution. The 3 of Air, which signifies the development of thoughts, symbolizes insights gained through painful or challenging circumstances that bring about renewal.

Myths: This decan is associated with myths about sacred vows, betrayal, and the enduring consequences of unwise commitments.

Card Details

Decan Ruler (Saturn): Saturn, exalted in Libra and ruling this decan, establishes a connection between a promise and its fulfillment, emphasizing the importance of making commitments and honoring them consistently. While Saturn excels at binding things together, it is also known for bringing challenges and hardship. This decan focuses on identifying trustworthy partners and forging agreements with them, emphasizing the creation of a strong, enduring bond between two parties. Individuals with Saturn in the second decan of Libra gradually come to understand the foundations of lasting agreements, recognizing over time that such commitments form the bedrock of human society. While they are not immune to betrayal, these painful experiences become instructive, deepening their insight into trust and responsibility.

Decan (Libra): This second decan of Libra represents enduring bonds and blended karma—choosing whom to bind oneself to—and the terms of that bond—is crucial. This is where sacred vows and pacts are made, with the greatest importance placed on clear terms—only well-defined agreements can prevent discord among close partners. Everything starts with a vow. Its direction, though, is shaped by the promise itself and the choices of those who make it. This decan carries images of both joy and sorrow, offering glimpses of heartache and fulfillment alike. This decan asks who or what do you obligate or bind yourself to? This bond, which functions as a contract, serves dual roles within this decan: providing protection while simultaneously imposing obligation. This decan highlights situations where a person is tied to a duty they find burdensome or joyless. It reveals the presence of unwise commitments, presenting a dilemma: either uphold one’s promise and endure hardship or break one’s vow to gain some freedom. This decan also signifies betrayal, a breach of trust that causes pain proportional to the strength of the bond violated.

3: Threes represent development in the world of the element.

Tree of Life (Binah in Yetzirah): The Three of Swords corresponds to Binah in Yetzirah. In the Astral World, Binah is the development of thoughts.

Sephira (Binah): All threes deal with organization through definition and delineation, and corresponds to the third sephira, Binah, which is commonly referred to by Qabalists as “Understanding.” Binah is associated with the slowest, outermost traditional planet, Saturn. Saturn represents the slowing down of cosmic energy as it contracts unlimited potential into the structure of linear time and matter. The Saturn archetype structures the small “r” reality principle, limiting infinite potential so as to bring order and consistency to human life, thereby shaping the framework within which transformation can occur.

World (Yetzirah): All Swords correspond to the third of four worlds, Yetzirah (“The World of Formation”), which is also called the formative world. The element associated with the World of Yetzirah is air.

The Story of Air: The element of air, traditionally symbolized by the suit of swords in the Tarot system, embodies the preeminent power of the intellect. The astrological air signs are renowned for their exceptional cognitive abilities, encompassing critical thinking and articulate expression. The intellect, a quintessential quality intrinsic to the air element, facilitates the processes of analysis, division, and the incisive capacity to cut through complexities when confronted with intricate problems that necessitate rational and discerning solutions. The narratives and stories aligned with the air element revolve thematically around the exploration of confronting and resolving challenges through the strategic application of mental faculties.
